Eling is a picturesque village that sits along the edge of Southampton Water and the New Forest. With a mix of boardwalk paths around Bartley Water and open fields, it’s a varied and interesting route to explore with your dog.
A few accessibility/safety considerations: There are some short slopes along the walk, as well as boardwalks with narrow passing points.
Eling Car Park – this is on the left hand side before crossing the Eling toll bridge.
From the car park head towards the cemetery.
Follow the path directly ahead of you which will lead to a boardwalk.
Follow the boardwalk which runs parallel to Bartley Water.
Continue along the boardwalk. There are some lovely platforms to stop and take in the view along the way.
Continue on the path as it bends around to the right or follow the optional step below.
To extend your walk you can take the path to the left at step 6 for an additional loop. Follow the path around, and you will then re-join the path at step 6.
Continue onto the bridge over Bartley Water.
Pause for a moment and take in the scenic views. Can you spot the resident little egrets fishing in the shallows?
For a more accessible route, continue along the gravel path. If you do follow this route, skip ahead to step 14.
Turn right after the bridge down this path. It will link up with the gravel track in the previous step after a sort walk.
Follow this path along the water’s edge for a more scenic view.
Continue along this path. Can you spot Eling toll bridge in the background?
Re-join the gravel path at this point.
Continue along the gravel path where you will arrive at Eling toll bridge.
Turn right to walk along Eling toll bridge and head towards the car park. Remember to keep to the right hand side to walk along the footpath.
Once at the car park you can choose to end your walk or continue on towards the second loop. To do this cross the road at the entrance to the car park and take the first path on your left. Continue past the metal barrier along the gravel path.
Take the path to the left which will lead to an area of open field along Eling Waterfront.
Bring your binoculars and take a look over the water. Can you see any wading birds feeding or resting? During the winter months, this is a popular spot for migratory birds such as black-tailed godwits and dunlin.
Continue around the path on the outside of the field to complete the loop. Whilst you’re here, why not try some off lead play and engagement games with your dog or practice your recall skills?
Continue on the path at the edge of the field around the electrical pylon.
Continue to follow this path through the trees to reach where you entered the field.
