Guided Waggy Walk at Portchester Castle

Fully Booked

Join us for a guided, group dog walk around Portchester Castle. This walk takes in gorgeous coastal views, fascinating local history and has a large open greenspace that’s ideal for off-lead play.

We’ll walk at a gentle pace, allowing our dogs plenty of opportunities to engage with their environment along the way. The walk should take around one hour, however, it may be slightly longer or shorter depending on the pace of the group and how often we stop.

This walk is free to attend, but places are limited so please be sure to book.

Event details

Meeting place and parking: We will meet at the large pay and display car park at Portchester Castle, PO16 9QN. What3words location: ///slices.apples.socket.

Dogs per person: The maximum number of dogs per person is two, but we recommend one dog per person where possible.

Leads: Dogs must stay on lead for the majority of the walk, but there will be an opportunity for off-lead play towards the end.

What to bring: You will need a lead, collar and/or harness for your dog, as well as poo bags and treats. Please dress appropriately for the weather and bring sturdy footwear.

Nervous dogs: We want everyone to be comfortable on our walk, so if you have a nervous dog that needs a little more space, please feel free to join in from further away so that there is some distance between yourself and the main group. Before touching/feeding/approaching an unknown dog, please check with the owner that this is okay.

Accessibility: There is some uneven ground on this walk – we will cover gentle slopes and mixed terrain, including gravel and grass.

Important note about dog walking equipment: We cannot allow the use of prong collars, shock collars (sometimes called e-collars), choke chains, or any other kinds of aversive equipment on our walks. These tools pose safety risks and fall outside of our ethical guidelines, so we kindly ask that you leave them at home. You are still welcome to join us using a standard collar or harness, and we are happy to discuss why we take this stance and ethical alternatives.

Book your place: To book your place, please email Alice Ashcroft-Dalley at Alice.Ashcroft-Dalley@hants.gov.uk with:

  • the number of people and dogs you would like to attend
  • a phone number that we can contact you on if need be

Our outdoor walks and activities are weather dependant. We aim to let you know by email in good time if a walk is cancelled due to bad weather, but please check your emails before leaving home.
